چکیده

Devices in which a controlled flow of electrons can be obtained are the basic building blocks of all the electronic circuits. Before the discovery of transistor in 1948, such devices were mostly vacuum tubes (also called valves) like the vacuum diode which has two electrodes, viz., anode (often called plate) and cathode; triode which has three electrodes – cathode, plate and grid; tetrode and pentode (respectively with 4 and 5 electrodes). In a vacuum tube, the electrons are supplied by a heated cathode and the controlled flow of these electrons in vacuum is obtained by varying the voltage between its different electrodes. Vacuum is required in the inter-electrode space; otherwise the moving electrons may lose their energy on collision with the air molecules in their path. In these devices the electrons can flow only from the cathode to the anode (i.e., only in one direction). Therefore, such devices are generally referred to as valves. These vacuum tube devices are bulky, consume high power, operate generally at high voltages (~100 V) and have limited life and low reliability. The seed of the development of modern solid-state semiconductor electronics goes back to 1930’s when it was realised that some solidstate semiconductors and their junctions offer the possibility of controlling the number and the direction of flow of charge carriers through them. Simple excitations like light, heat or small applied voltage can change the number of mobile charges in a semiconductor. Note that the supply Chapter Fourteen

Polarization Mode Dispersion in Optical Fibers

In the previous chapter, we discussed devices based on deliberately introduced birefringence in an optical fiber, thus utilizing the polarization effects to our advantage. In Chapter 10, we discuss the detrimental aspect of birefringence in optical fibers—namely, polarization mode dispersion (PMD). The existence of birefringence in a fiber implies that the fiber supports two orthogonally polari...

An Update on Psychotic Depression

There has been a debate since the 1980’s whether delusional depression or psychotic depression is a distinct psychiatric disorder. (Glassman & Roose, 1981) Currently, DSM-IVTR classifies psychotic symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder as a severity specifier. However, researchers in the area of major depressive disorder, with psychotic features (PMD) believe that PMD is a distinct...

Placental Mesenchymal Dysplasia

We report a dichorionic twin gestation with diffuse placental mesenchymal dysplasia (PMD) and androgenetic biparental mosaicism (ABM) involving one twin's placenta with complete absence of fetal development for that twin. To our knowledge, this is the 1st reported case of PMD without fetal development. We discuss the gross, histologic, and genetic hallmarks of PMD and the spectrum of variabilit...

Wideband all-order polarization mode dispersion compensation via pulse shaping.

We demonstrate the application of ultrafast pulse-shaping techniques for experimental wideband all-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation, for the first time to our knowledge. PMD is treated as arbitrary variations of state of polarization and phase versus wavelength, in an all-order sense. Consequently, two pulse shapers are implemented in a serial manner to compensate for the p...

Right-shift for non-speech motor processing in adults who stutter.

INTRODUCTION In adults who do not stutter (AWNS), the control of hand movement timing is assumed to be lateralized to the left dorsolateral premotor cortex (PMd). In adults who stutter (AWS), the network of speech motor control is abnormally shifted to the right hemisphere. Motor impairments in AWS are not restricted to speech, but extend to non-speech orofacial and finger movements. We here in...
